Problem
The client required corrosion protection for an in-service aboveground storage tank at their terminal in São Paulo, Brazil. The foundation and chime area showed vulnerability to long-term corrosion, and a system was needed to both protect and monitor the tank’s integrity.
Zerust Solution
Engineers from ZERUST® Integrity Solutions developed a custom Chime Ring IDS to preserve the foundation and chime area of the tank. The system combined Zerion™ FVS-S15 Corrosion Inhibitor Sleeves, sealant components, and corrosion monitoring coupons to provide long-term corrosion protection while enabling performance tracking over time.
Solution Specifics
Prior to installation, the tank chime interface was cleaned and coated with Macropoxy 646 Concrete Primer. Corrosion Monitoring Coupon Assemblies were then embedded beneath the tank floor plates at the chime interface to track inhibitor effectiveness. Zerion™ FVS-S15 Sleeves were placed around the perimeter, covered with Sealant Tape, and sealed with multiple layers of protective Topcoat to complete the Chime Ring IDS.
The installation was carried out by ZERUST® – Brazil personnel with supervision and training provided by a ZERUST® Integrity Solutions Field Engineer, ensuring proper application and knowledge transfer.
Results
The corrosion mitigation system was successfully installed despite challenging weather conditions. The project was completed on schedule, and ZERUST® – Brazil personnel received valuable training in the IDS application method.
To ensure continued protection, it is recommended that the installed Corrosion Monitoring Coupons be removed and replaced six months post-installation and analyzed by the ZERUST® Integrity Solutions laboratory. Ongoing monitoring will confirm system integrity and guide any future actions.
