Project Summary
ZERUST Integrity Solutions® supported a corrosion mitigation project for an out-of-service aboveground storage tank in Texas, USA. The project focused on helping protect the underside of the tank bottom from corrosion by implementing a foundation-applied corrosion inhibitor solution prior to tank floor plate reinstallation.
The scope included application of ZERUST® Zerion® FAN-6 across the tank foundation and installation of high-temperature ER corrosion monitoring probes to support long-term corrosion management and asset integrity monitoring.
Asset & Site Details
-
Asset: Aboveground Storage Tank
- Tank Diameter: 90 feet (≈ 27.4 m)
-
Service Status: Out of Service
-
Foundation Type: Soil/Sand Foundation with Liner
-
Tank Floor Design: Single-Bottom Construction
-
Operating Conditions: Elevated temperature service (>120°F / 49°C)
-
Weather During Application: 75°F (≈ 24°C), 82% humidity, overcast
Solution Implemented
ZERUST Integrity Solutions® designed and implemented a corrosion mitigation program utilizing:
- ZERUST® Zerion® FAN-6 corrosion inhibitor
- Foundation-applied inhibitor delivery methodology
- High-temperature ER corrosion monitoring probes
- Dedicated monitoring access points for future corrosion data collection
Prior to floor plate installation, approximately 19 pails (285 kg) of ZERUST® Zerion® FAN-6 were evenly distributed across the tank foundation surface. Four PVC access locations were also installed beneath the tank floor to accommodate future installation and monitoring of high-temperature ER probes.
The inhibitor was applied directly to the prepared sand foundation before reinstallation of the tank floor plates. Following application, four high-temperature ER probes were installed to provide ongoing corrosion monitoring capability beneath the tank bottom.
Outcome
The corrosion mitigation solution was successfully implemented with minimal installation challenges.
The project established both proactive corrosion protection and long-term monitoring capability beneath the tank bottom. The installed ER probes provide a means for ongoing corrosion data collection and future corrosion rate assessment, supporting informed maintenance planning and long-term asset integrity management.
